Marketing research recognized as 'Best in Track' by international association

RELEASED: Dec. 23, 2010

EAU CLAIRE — Dr. Rama Yelkur and Dr. Chuck Tomkovick, professors of marketing at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, and Allison Williams, Appleton, a senior marketing major, have been awarded "Best in Track" by MBAA International for a research project.

Yelkur and Tomkovick's summer research collaborative grant, sponsored by UW-Eau Claire's Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, focused on Olympic advertisers and studied whether these firms experience stock price gains around the games. "Sporting Events and Shareholder Wealth: Are the Olympic Games a Tradable Event for Television," a paper resulting from the study, was accepted for presentation and publication at the Spring Conference of the Marketing Management Association March 24, 2011 in Chicago. Yelkur and Williams will attend and receive the award for the best paper in the Sports and Events Marketing track.

The study stems from a new stream of research on Olympics advertisers, begun last year. Yelkur and Tomkovick have previously studied advertising effectiveness and stock price gains of firms advertising in the NFL’s Super Bowl games.

MBAA International acts as a coordinating body for autonomous groups in a variety of business-related academic areas, including the Marketing Management Association. The organizations represent a wide variety of disciplines, including accounting, economics, finance, information systems, government, international business and more.
