EAU CLAIRE — A professional who has worked in leadership positions at educational institutions for nearly 20 years has been named the registrar at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

James Barrett will begin his new duties Jan. 3, 2011. He replaces Sue Moore, who recently retired from UW-Eau Claire.

"We have hired an experienced, innovative and energetic professional to lead the Registrar's Office," said UW-Eau Claire Provost Patricia Kleine. "Given his significant experience and many skills, I am confident Jim Barrett will be an active and effective campus leader."

Barrett will come to UW-Eau Claire from Fayetteville Technical Community College in North Carolina, where he is the associate vice president for student services. Prior to taking the position in North Carolina, he served as director of enrollment management at the Mid-State Technical College in Wisconsin Rapids for six years. He also has held administrative positions at several educational institutions along the East Coast.

"I am thrilled to be the next registrar of UW-Eau Claire," Barrett said. "Three factors attracted me to the position: people, programs and place. UW-Eau Claire is a collaborative and collegial environment, which is the type of environment I truly enjoy working in. The university offers an impressive diversity of programs, including a community involvement component. With the strong professional team in the Registrar's Office, I look forward to playing a key support role in providing excellent services dedicated to student success. Finally, the Eau Claire area is truly a special place to live and work. My family is looking forward to returning to Wisconsin. No other state I have lived and worked in can compare to Wisconsin."

The Registrar's Office provides services related to the creation and maintenance of academic records. It oversees student registration, coordinates course rolls and grade submission, and maintains academic transcripts. The office also publishes the undergraduate and graduate catalogs, provides diplomas, administers enrollment verifications and assigns classroom space. Additionally, the Registrar's Office handles the administration of all military educational benefits.

Along with overseeing these responsibilities, the registrar also will lead efforts to convert academic records and other office functions from the university's mainframe-based administrative computing system to PeopleSoft Campus Solutions software as mandated by the UW System, Kleine said.

"Jim Barrett has an understanding of technologies and how effective use of these technologies will better serve the university community," Kleine said. "His expertise will be valuable as we move forward with our current and future technology projects."

The registrar reports to the provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs.
