SUBJECT: Message to campus regarding sexual assault investigation

The message below was sent by Dr. Beth Hellwig, vice chancellor for Student Affairs at UW-Eau Claire, to all members of the campus community this morning regarding an ongoing sexual assault investigation. Since this is an ongoing investigation, the university cannot comment nor provide any other information.

Questions regarding the investigation should be directed to the Eau Claire Police Department.

UW-Eau Claire students, faculty and staff –

I am writing to provide the campus community with factual information regarding an ongoing sexual assault investigation at an off-campus house.

As you might imagine, there is limited information I can share while the investigation is being conducted. I can confirm that the Eau Claire Police Department is investigating two sexual assault cases that list 1404 State Street as the location of the assaults. Other information that has been circulating in personal conversations, e-mails and a student publication is unconfirmed and unsubstantiated.

I assure you that the University is fully cooperating with the Eau Claire police investigation. UW-Eau Claire takes very seriously any allegations of sexual assault or violation of University policies. I have charged Dean of Students Brian Carlisle with conducting an internal investigation of allegations against individual students and organizations and, based on his findings, pursuing appropriate disciplinary action.

If anyone has direct knowledge of the assaults or additional information that could be helpful to the police investigation, please contact the Dean of Students Office at 715-836-5626; the University Police Confidential Tipster Line at 715-855-5555; or the Eau Claire Police Department, Detective Division, Detective Dahlgren at 715-839-4983.

UW-Eau Claire has a number of resources available to help students who are the victims of sexual assault, and I encourage anyone who thinks they may have been sexually assaulted to seek help through University Police, 715-836-2222; Student Health Services, 715-836-4311; the Center for Awareness of Sexual Assault (CASA), 715-836-HELP; Counseling Services, 715-836-5521; or the Dean of Students Office, 715-836-5626.
