Story Idea
A book written by Robert Reid, a senior lecturer in education studies, was recently published by ALA Editions in Chicago. The book, titled "Reid's Read-Alouds 2: Modern-Day Classics from C.S. Lewis to Lemony Snicket," examines 200 children's and young adult chapter books published between 1950 and 1999.

Story Idea
Thirty-one UW-Eau Claire students will volunteer at a Habitat for Humanity project in Florida during Winterim 2011. UW-Eau Claire's Circle K club will sponsor the Alternative Winter Break trip to Miami, from Jan. 1-9, 2011. Sixteen Circle K members from other schools also will participate. The UW-Eau Claire Circle K club, chartered in 1978, is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Eau Claire. A watercolor exhibit by visiting scholar Jiseong Jang and his wife, Eunkyeong Han, will be on display Dec. 13-17 in the Foster Gallery of the Haas Fine Arts Center at UW-Eau Claire. The opening reception will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 13. Jang is an art education professor of Jeonju National University in South Korea and is working with the UW-Eau Claire department of art & design and the College of Education and Human Sciences. He and Han have studied Korean traditional painting for 20 years and their work reflects Korean traditional method. Jang's exhibit is titled "Landscapes — Eau Claire" and Han's is titled "Flowers."

Story Idea
A biology faculty member and five students will spend three weeks in Cambodia in January 2011 surveying the native wildlife. Deb Freund, an associate lecturer of biology, and the students will help a non-governmental organization catalogue species in a national park. Several of the students also joined Freund in Cambodia last summer to survey species in rice paddies. In addition to their research, the students will work to educate Cambodians about conservation-related topics. For details, contact Freund at 715-836-3190 or freundda@uwec.edu.

Calendar Notes

  • UW-Eau Claire students will take final exams this week.
  • The fall 2010 semester will end Friday, Dec. 17.
  • Commencement ceremonies are slated for 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, in Zorn Arena.
  • UW-Eau Claire will be closed Friday, Dec. 24, for the Christmas holiday.
  • UW-Eau Claire will be closed Monday, Dec. 27, for a state-mandated furlough day.
