Media Memo: Students presenting graphic design projects to area nonprofit organizations

TO: News Editors and Directors

FROM: Rebecca Dienger

DATE: Dec. 9, 2010

SUBJECT: Students presenting graphic design projects to area nonprofit organizations

Senior graphic design students from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will present their volunteer contributions to area nonprofit organizations at 3:30 p.m. today (Dec. 9) in the Wisconsin Room of Davies Center.

Each year, groups of students volunteer to help organizations that may not have the means to contract professional design services to promote their services. Over the years, their designs have been used by organizations including the Chippewa Valley Regional Airport, the Eau Claire Children's Museum, Hope Gospel Mission and A Bridge to Hope. This year, 30 students created public awareness campaign proposals for the Eau Claire Community Foundation, Arbor Place Inc. and a new organization affiliated with Head Start called E.C.L.I.P.S.E., among others.

According to Christos Theo, professor and chair of the department of art & design, the current set of identity graphics used on all Eau Claire city buses is a result of this annual fall project.

"On this day our students will be donating their talents to these nonprofit organizations, whose members have devoted so much of themselves to helping our community," Theo said. "On several occasions, these presentations have become quite moving and emotional for everyone involved."

The organizations are not obligated to use the suggestions and creations by the students, but Theo said it's rare that something from the presentation is not utilized. Students receive service-learning credit for their participation in the project.

Members of the media are welcome to attend and photograph or videotape today's presentations. For more information, contact Christos Theo at 715-836-3277 or theocm@uwec.edu.
