SUBJECT: UW-Eau Claire Spanish students visit Montessori for book project
Students from a UW-Eau Claire Spanish class will visit the Montessori Charter School from 1:15-1:45 p.m. TODAY (Dec. 6) to share a book project with the students.
The UW-Eau Claire students take a popular children's book, like "Curious George," and change it slightly by adding Latin American cultural references. They "make" their book by doing their own rewriting and illustrations.
During today's visit, the university authors will read their books to small groups of children. A short discussion will follow.
The project exposes the university students to a new experience and the thrill of using their own materials to work with children.
The children know the traditional version of these stories so they can easily focus on the author and how they made the book. The children also can learn about the Latin American references.
The UW-Eau Claire students are not education majors, so for some this is their only exposure to teaching children. Last year, several of the UW-Eau Claire students considered changing their major after this experience, and one returned this year to teach Latin American culture at the Montessori Charter School.
For more information contact Amy Young, a UW-Eau Claire lecturer in the department of foreign languages, at 715-836-3541 or youngai@uwec.edu.
