Upcoming building projects prompt administrative changes

RELEASED: Dec. 6, 2010

EAU CLAIRE — In anticipation of upcoming construction projects totaling nearly $100 million at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Chancellor Brian Levin-Stankevich has announced changes in responsibilities for two university officials charged with ensuring the efficient administration of those projects.

Following consultation with the UW-Eau Claire University Senate's Executive Committee regarding how to best facilitate the administration of the construction projects — including a new university student center, Children's Center and education building — Levin-Stankevich has announced that Mike Rindo will assume the interim title of assistant chancellor for facilities and Ricardo Gonzales has been named director of facilities planning.

Rindo also will continue in his current position as executive director of University Communications, which he has held since 2001. He will serve for up to three years in the position of assistant chancellor for facilities, Levin-Stankevich said. In that capacity, Rindo will supervise all aspects of facilities planning and facilities management at UW-Eau Claire.

"Mike already has done important work over the past two years as UW-Eau Claire's liaison between the UW System and the community for the planning of these major construction projects, as well as for our campus master-planning process," Levin-Stankevich said. "He will continue to supervise the director of facilities planning and the director of facilities management while serving as the lead university officer on issues and communication related to our campus physical plant."

As director of facilities planning, Gonzales, formerly campus facilities planner, will be responsible for implementation of the Campus Master Plan, campus physical development plan and long-term maintenance plan. He also serves as the functional lead for planning major capital projects and as the environmental officer for the university.

The final design phase for UW-Eau Claire's new $48.8 million university student center is nearing completion. Construction on the project, approved in April by the State Building Commission, will begin in early 2011.

The proposed $3.2 million Children's Center, approved in November by the UW System Board of Regents, must next be approved by the State Building Commission. Construction on the center, which will replace the current facility housed in Campus School, is expected to be completed in 2011.

The proposed $44.5 million education building will house UW-Eau Claire's College of Education and Human Sciences administrative units; classroom space; the departments of education studies, English, foreign languages and special education; and select student support services. The design phase of the project will continue into 2011, with construction completion anticipated in 2013.
