EAU CLAIRE — Caroline Smith and the Good Night Sleeps will play three free concerts at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Sept. 3-4. The indie-folk group from Minneapolis will perform in The Cabin, the Davies Center coffeehouse, at 11:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. Friday and 8 p.m. Saturday.

"Caroline Smith and the Good Night Sleeps have all the makings of a band on the verge of breaking out," wrote City Pages. "Smith's folky songs are sunny, simple, and memorable without straying into saccharine; her sincere, chatty stage presence is disarming; and her backing band (Cloud Cult's Arlen Peiffer on drums and Lucy Michelle and the Velvet Lapelles' Jesse Schuster on bass) loves to tour. ... Employing a banjo, Smith's incredible voice, and a slew of other offbeat, low-tech instruments, Smith and company have built a live show that is not to be missed."

"Backyard Tent Set" (2008) is the band's acclaimed debut CD, which Smith describes as "storybook folk with an indie twist." She and Schuster issued a limited-release full-length recording, "Live at the Cedar," last January.

"Caroline Smith cites TLC and Notorious B.I.G. as two of her inspirations," reported the Minneapolis Star Tribune — "surprising, since the petite powerhouse strums her guitar like a young, skinny, jeans-wearing Joni Mitchell and sings in a voice reminiscent of quavery Billie Holiday with a hint of wistful, folksy Feist. It's a pretty great voice, actually, good enough to draw the ringing praises of music bloggers, local radio stations and iTunes reviewers alike and to captivate audiences from New York City to Fargo."

Cabin performances are free and open to all ages. Soft drinks, domestic and imported beer, specialty coffee drinks and tea are sold at all evening programs. Proof of age is required for alcohol purchases.

All performances are produced and managed completely by student members of The Cabin committee of the Student Senate's University Activities Commission. For a complete schedule, contact the Activities and Programs office, 715-836-4833, or visit the Cabin website.
