EAU CLAIRE — A sophomore music major at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire became the Drum Corps International World Class Section Champion solo tubist during the organization's annual individual and ensemble competition July 24-25 in San Antonio, Texas.

Kurtis Polishinski, Sun Prairie, is a member of the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps, one of 23 groups in the DCI World Class section. Each organization has 16-20 tubists. Polishinski performed selections from Alec Wilder's Suite No.1 for Tuba and Piano.

"I was a little nervous since I was the first (and only) tuba to perform on the first day of competition," said Polishinski. "My studies with Dr. Young helped me to prepare for this challenge. I have learned a lot from Doc and all the other studio members."

Polishinski studies tuba with Dr. Jerry Young, professor of music in the UW-Eau Claire department of music and theatre arts, and is completing a double major in music and computer science. He is a member of the Blugold Marching Band and the Symphony Band. He learned his competition piece during one-hour lunch and dinner breaks during 12-hour practice days.

"Kurtis came to us last fall already a part of the university's low brass legacy," said Young, noting that Polishinski was a student of Chris Gleason, an outstanding UW-Eau Claire tuba alumnus, who teaches at Patrick Marsh Middle School in Sun Prairie.

"He embodies both the musical talent and work ethic necessary for success in a very demanding and competitive part of the music profession. His achievement is representative of the work done by so many of our students in the euphonium and tuba studio, as well as that of students across the department of music and theatre arts," Young said.

Polishinski plans to continue his studies with Young, go on to graduate school and perform at a professional level.
