Students receive scholarships from state organization

RELEASED: April 30, 2010

EAU CLAIRE —Two University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire students were among five recipients of scholarships awarded by the Wisconsin Association of Educational Opportunity Program Personnel at the organization's spring conference April 19-21 in La Crosse.

Courtney Allen, Milwaukee, a sophomore psychology major, received the $1,000 Mid-America Association of Educational Opportunity Program Personnel scholarship. Tammy Koxlien, Strum, a senior psychology major, was selected for the $1,000 Silas Purnell Scholarship.

Both students are participants in UW-Eau Claire's TRIO Student Support Services program and were nominated by Dr. Bruce Ouderkirk, Student Support Services director. This is the sixth consecutive year that participants in the program have been awarded scholarships from WAEOPP.

WAEOPP has representatives throughout the state who work with federal TRIO programs to provide services for first-generation college students and those who are income eligible. The organization awards a limited number of scholarships each year. Applicants are evaluated on academic achievement, co-curricular involvement and financial need.

Ouderkirk said Allen did not know anyone when she arrived at UW-Eau Claire from Milwaukee, but immediately became a pacesetter.

"Courtney is very deserving of this scholarship," he said. "Along with being an excellent student, she's been involved in a wide variety of campus organizations and community service activities."

Koxlien started attending UW-Eau Claire out of high school, stopped for more than 20 years and has come back with a strong sense of purpose, Ouderkirk said.

"Members of the scholarship committee told me that they were extremely impressed with the way Tammy has turned her education around," Ouderkirk said. "Her academic performance has been exceptional, and she is planning to apply to graduate programs after she completes her bachelor's degree this December."
