Singing Statesmen to perform May 7

UW-Eau Claire Singing Statesmen
The Singing Statesmen at the Basilica of San Francisco, Buenos Aires, Argentina, on their tour in January.

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Singing Statesmen, directed by Dr. Gary Schwartzhoff, professor of music, will perform at 7:30 p.m. May 7 in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

The Statesmen will perform selections by Anton Bruckner, Thomas Tallis, Ola Gjeilo, Franz Biebl and others, including the original composition "Fell From a Dream" by junior Joe Holtan, Port Washington. The concert also will feature a cappella group The Innocent Men and student conductors Jacob Truby, a senior from Appleton, and Mike Jones, a senior from Hastings, Minn.

The Singing Statesmen is an all male choral ensemble started in 1967 by Morris Hayes. The ensemble is composed of 64 students from various academic backgrounds. Each year the Statesmen participate in the Homecoming Varsity Show and the Viennese Ball. As the years progress, the ensemble continues to release new albums while offering a new variety of music at each performance. The Singing Statesmen have represented UW-Eau Claire on six international tours, most recently to Argentina and Uruguay in 2010.

Tickets, available at the University Service Center, 715-836-3727 or 800-949-UWEC, are $5 for the general public; $4 for those 62 and older, 17 and younger and faculty and staff with a university ID; and $1.50 for students with a university ID.
