College women to host empowering day for girls

RELEASED: April 29, 2010

EAU CLAIRE — The College Women Role Models, a new student organization at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, will host "A Day for BEAUTY" from 1-4:30 p.m. May 1 in Hibbard Humanities Hall.

BEAUTY in the event's title stands for brilliance, empowerment, activity, uniqueness, talent, and youth, and is designed for girls ages eight and up along with their adult chaperones. Four activity stations, staffed by UW-Eau Claire faculty and students, will educate and empower young girls.

"This event will provide a positive environment to help combat the constant bombardment of falsified messages of beauty that girls face every day," said Kallie Sandell, president of College Women Role Models. "This is a timely issue everywhere. We want to have a positive impact on young girls and be a support system for them."

A physical wellness station, led Dr. Gary Van Guilder, instructor in kinesiology, and kinesiology students, will stress the importance of being active and healthy. Activities will include trust games and stretching and strength improvement techniques.

A social-emotional wellness station, led by Dr. Deb Pattee, assistant professor of education studies, and education studies students, will feature a clip from the movie "Mean Girls" and activities centered on emotional intelligence, bullying, body image, peer pressure, decision making and respect.

An education station led by education studies students will emphasize the importance of intellectual beauty. Future goals and the importance of thinking for oneself will be the focus of the station.

Chaperones will have a station of their own, led by Pattee. Physical wellness, social-emotional wellness and the education of the youth participants will be the focus of the station.

The event will wrap up with an art project in which participants will create a piece that represents their real beauty, uniqueness and individuality.

To register for "A Day for BEAUTY," contact Kallie Sandell at 952-239-5418 or sandelkj@uwec.edu, or Dr. Deb Pattee at patteedk@uwec.edu.
