EAU CLAIRE — The Conservationists, a student organization at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, in partnership with the Residence Hall Association, have established a competition between all residence halls during Earth Month, April 5-May 7. The program, called Residence Hall RecycleMania, is a friendly competition that aims to increase awareness, efficiency and use of the recycling system in the residence halls.
The winner of Residence Hall RecycleMania will have the highest ratio of recyclables to trash during the five-week period and will receive a trophy made from recyclable materials designed by a member of The Conservationists.
The competition is a spin-off of the 10-week RecycleMania national competition held from Jan. 17-March 27. The annual contest is led locally by student volunteers from the Student National Environment Health Association and The Conservationists.
This year UW-Eau Claire placed first among UW System campuses in the Food Service Organics (compost) competition, recycling 7.43 pounds of food service organics per person. The university also placed second among UW System campuses in the Per Capita Classic competition, collecting 12.22 pounds of recyclables per person. UW-Eau Claire's results in all other categories can be found online. Nationwide, participants recycled or composted more than 84 million pounds of material during the course of ten weeks. More than 600 colleges and universities signed up this year.
According to Veolia Environmental Services, as of April 19 the standings for Residence Hall RecycleMania are as follows. Ratios are expressed in pounds of recyclables to trash:
