EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Model United Nations Club won distinction in each of the five committees at the 34th annual Arrowhead Model United Nations Conference April 15-18 at UW-River Falls.

The purpose of the club is to discuss international politics and prepare for such conferences. The group also promotes international diversity and brings together students who are interested in international politics.

Sixty registered delegations representing more than 18 universities from as far away as Ghana, Africa, attended the conference.

In each of the five committees, a delegate was honored with the Best Delegate Award and a "rapporteur" was elected to report that committee's progress to the General Assembly.

A number of UW-Eau Claire students were recognized. World politics major Brian Stauber, Green Bay, was named best delegate and elected rapporteur in the Security Council.

World politics major Armon Tabrizi, Platteville, and political science major Collin Hawkins, Eau Claire, tied for the best delegate award in the Political and Security Committee. Political science major Andy Hurd, Deerfield, also was nominated.

In the Environmental Committee, political science and music major Lora Rae Anderson, Green Bay, was awarded best delegate. Political science majors Henry Booth, from the United Kingdom, and Justin Mork, Wausau, were elected rapporteurs.

History major Michael Schmitz, Rochester, Minn., was awarded best delegate and elected rapporteur in the Social, Cultural and Humanitarian Committee.

Awards also were given for the best policy speeches. Tabrizi won the Best Speech Award for his introduction speech on behalf of the Iranian delegation. Stauber won honorable mention for his speech on behalf of the delegation of Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The most coveted award at the conference, the Best Delegation Award, went to UW-Eau Claire's Iranian delegation represented by economics major Aaron Brewster, Stanley; political science major Nathan Zeckmeister, Antigo; Tabrizi, Hawkins, Anderson, Schmitz, Mork and Booth.

"Everyone did a remarkable job," Tabrizi said. "Those who won awards could not have done so without the help, support and efforts of the rest of the team."
