Student artist wins first-place award in graphics competition

RELEASED: April 27, 2010

OK Go band members put their faces into the cut-out display of their band that was created for their Nov. 12 concert at UW-Eau Claire.

EAU CLAIRE — A University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire student artist was recognized with a first-place award in the 2010 graphics competition of the National Association for Campus Activities Northern Plains Regional Conference. Recognized for excellence in design, innovation and creativity, the winning entry was exhibited and the award presented at the NACA regional conference April 15-18 in St. Paul, Minn.

Nicole Feldkamp, Kaukauna, received the award in the miscellaneous publicity category for her painted cardboard cut-out created to promote the Nov. 12 concert by the band OK Go. The piece was made from a large cardboard box that was cut apart to form a flat stand-up form. A publicity photo of the band, copied on to a transparency, was projected on the cardboard. Feldkamp painted the life-size image with acrylic and tempera paints, and cut out areas where students could insert their own faces.

The completed OK Go cut-out was displayed in the university's student center the week of the concert. It was displayed at the venue on the day of the show, and at the event the actual band members put their faces into their own cut-out portraits.

Feldkamp is a May bachelor of arts degree candidate in art. She has been involved with the University Activities Commission of the Student Senate for five years, since her freshman year, and has chaired the UAC Concert Committee. She has also worked for two years as a student activities assistant in the Activities and Programs office of the University Centers.
