Jazz I to perform spring concert April 29

EAU CLAIRE — University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Jazz Ensemble I will perform its spring concert at 7:30 p.m. April 29 in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

The ensemble, directed by Robert Baca, professor of music, will begin with "So What" by Miles Davis, featuring senior Aaron Hedenstrom, St. Paul, Minn., on alto saxophone; and sophomore Joe Niemann, Brookfield, on trumpet. Next will be Christian McBride's "Shade of a Cedar Tree," featuring senior Brandon Covelli, Racine, on piano; and "All the Things You Are" by Jerome Kern, featuring seniors Brian Handeland, Minneapolis, Minn., on alto saxophone; Tyler Anderson, Eagan, Minn., on tenor saxophone; Mike Wolter, Madison, on guitar; Andy Detra, Sun Prairie, on bass; and Brian Claxton, Pepin, on drums.

The group also will perform "Gentleman John," by UW-Eau Claire graduate Corey Cunningham, featuring Cunningham, Holmen, on tenor saxophone; and "Stevie Wonder Medley," arranged by Mike Nelson, featuring Brian Handeland, Joe Niemann, senior Chris Bresette, Racine, and sophomore Kurt Shipe, Fond du Lac, on trumpet; senior Kyle Siegrist, Green Bay, on trombone; and junior Joe Tierney, Shawano, on baritone saxophone. The first half of the concert will conclude with Ray Noble's "Cherokee."

The second half of the performance will include "Play that Funky Music" by Robert Parissi, featuring Tierney; Maria Schneider's "Aires de Lando," featuring Hedenstrom; and "D Minor Mint" by Freddie Hubbard, featuring Niemann, Covelli and Cunningham. Next will be "Backward Step" by Nicholas Payton, featuring Covelli and Anderson. The concert will conclude with "Things to Come" by Dizzy Gillespie, featuring Hedenstrom, Handeland, Cunningham, Anderson and Tierney.

Jazz Ensemble I has recorded a CD each year for the past decade with two nominated for Grammy awards: "Jazz in Clear Water — Harpoon" and "Jazz in Clear Water — Things to Come."

Tickets, available at the University Service Center, 715-836-3727 or 800-949-UWEC, are $5 for the general public; $4 for those 62 and older, 17 and younger and faculty and staff with a university ID; and $1.50 for students with a university ID.
