Campus group to promote active lifestyles to elementary students

RELEASED: April 26, 2010

kids playingEAU CLAIRE — A University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire student organization dedicated to promoting healthy, active lifestyles among youth will host three after-school activity days at local elementary schools.

Blugold Active Living & Learning students have been challenged to reach out to the community and raise awareness of social issues as a result of taking a course called "Leadership Communication" with Dr. Martha Fay, assistant professor of communication and journalism. The group hopes to help kids make it a habit to get more physical activity every day.

"Our group looked at our common interests of being active and living a healthful life and really wanted to impress that upon the local youth," said junior Blake Hemminger, Annandale, Minn. "We want to demonstrate how simply being active for 30-60 minutes a day can benefit youngsters both in and outside the classroom."

The scheduled events include information about healthy lifestyle choices and stations focused on physical activity. The first event will be hosted at Manz Elementary April 26. Other activity days are May 4 at Putnam Heights Elementary and May 7 at Northwoods Elementary, all in Eau Claire.
