UW-Eau Claire Jazz IV and V to perform

RELEASED: April 20, 2010

EAU CLAIRE — University of Wisconsin Eau Claire Jazz Ensembles IV and V will perform a joint concert at 7:30 p.m. April 28 in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Both ensembles are directed by Robert Baca, professor of music.

The performance will begin with Jazz Ensemble V performing "Groovin' Hard" by Don Menza, featuring freshman Ben Stephens, Buffalo, Minn., on alto saxophone; and junior Travis Kaney, Sun Prairie, on tenor saxophone. The ensemble will continue with "In the Still of the Night" by Cole Porter, featuring junior Tyler Coakley, Oshkosh, on drums; and "Always and Forever" by Pat Metheny, featuring senior James Sonnentag, Middleton, on vibraphone. Next will be "Peanut Brittle Brigade" (Movement 3 from "The Nutcracker Suite"), featuring junior Jake Covill, Chippewa Falls, on trumpet; Kaney on clarinet; freshman Dan Wanamaker, Neenah, on piano; and freshman Joe Hinke, Somerset, on tenor saxophone; and "Rhythm of Our World" by Arturo Sandoval, featuring Covill on both trumpet and flugelhorn.

The first half of the concert will conclude with "Things Ain't What They Used to Be" by Mercer Ellington, featuring sophomore Matt Turek, Monroe, on trombone; freshman Nathan Fuhrman, Menomonie, on trumpet; junior Diane Stewart, St. Louis Park, Minn., on baritone saxophone; junior Aaron Cyr, Wauwatosa, on alto saxophone; junior Josh Sanford, Eagan, Minn., on bass; senior Peter Hanson, Princeton, Minn., on drums; and senior Chris Boyd, Apple Valley, Minn., on trumpet. Student conductors for Jazz V are seniors Brian Handeland, Minneapolis, Minn., and Aaron Hedenstrom, St. Paul, Minn.

Jazz Ensemble IV will begin the second half of the concert with "Boogie Stop Shuffle" by Charles Mingus, featuring freshman Cody Christian, Franklin, on bass; sophomore Jeron Jacobson, Burnsville, Minn., on alto saxophone; freshman Corey Feiock, Eagan, Minn., on trombone; senior Carrie Price, Waukesha, on baritone saxophone; senior Carl Schroeder, Plymouth, on trumpet; junior James McAdams, Madison, on tenor saxophone; and senior Nick LaMuro, Fort Atkinson, on drums.

Next will be "Have You Met Miss Jones?" by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, featuring senior Mike Mower, Black Hawk, S.D., on trumpet; sophomore Kyle Manley, Rosemount, Minn., on alto saxophone; "Glib" by Chuck Owen, featuring McAdams with freshman Alex Solberg, Hudson, on trombone; and freshman Davy Sumner, Fall Creek, on drums.

The concert will continue with "Isfahan" by Duke Ellington, featuring Manley; and "Corner Pocket" by Freddie Green, featuring sophomore Rachel Clark, Wisconsin Rapids, on piano; freshman Andrew Morgan, Eau Claire, on trumpet; McAdams, freshman Ryan Isensee, Sparta, on trombone; sophomore JJ Buczek, Port Washington, on tenor saxophone; and sophomore Jack Dillow, Glenwood City, on trumpet.

The concert will conclude with Count Basie's "Magic Flea," featuring Buczek and LaMuro. Student conductors for Jazz IV are seniors Brian Claxton, Pepin; and Corey Cunningham, Holmen.

The concert is free and open to the public.
