Concert Choir to perform spring concert

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Concert Choir will hold its spring concert at 2 p.m. April 18 in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

The choir, directed by Dr. Gary Schwartzhoff, professor of music, will begin its performance with "Haec Dies" by William Byrd followed by "Otche Nash" by Nikolai Golovanov, Z. Randall Stroope's "O Magnum Mysterium" and "O Nata Lux" by Morten Lauridsen. The first set will conclude with "Qui Sedes" by James Fritschel.

The second set will begin with "Cantate Domino" by Hans Leo Hassler and "Requiem" by Maurice Duruflé. Mack Wilberg's "Requiem" will conclude the second set.

For the third set, a cappella group Impromptu will perform original arrangements of popular music including "Love Takes Over," "Cover You" and "Elephant Love Medley."

In its final set Concert Choir will begin with a performance of "The Sounding Sea" by Eric Barnum and "A Boy and a Girl" by Eric Whitacre. Next will be René Clausen's "Quicksand Years" from "Three Whitman Settings," featuring junior baritone James Held, Waukesha. The group will conclude its performance with two selections by Moses Hogan, "We Shall Walk Through the Valley in Peace" and "Hold On."

Concert Choir will be accompanied on piano by sophomore Alexander Jacques, Oneida, and junior Eric Frei, La Crosse.

One of six UW-Eau Claire choral ensembles, Concert Choir has traveled to Europe on eight concert tours between 1964 and 2008. In 2006 the choir received an international award for artistic excellence and cultural exchange from the Federation of the Mediterranean in Italy. In 2009 the group performed at the Washington National Cathedral and at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts as part of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Choral Festival.

The choir's upcoming tour schedule is as follows:

  • April 21, Chippewa Falls High School; Appleton North High School.
  • April 22, Appleton East High School; Appleton Xavier High School; St. Norbert Abbey, De Pere.
  • April 23, Green Bay Preble High School; UW-Green Bay.

Tickets for the April 18 concert, available at the University Service Center, 715-836-3727 or 800-949-UWEC, are $5 for the public; $4 for those 62 and older, 17 and younger and faculty and staff with a university ID; and $1.50 for students with a university ID.
