Veterans program to feature one-mile float on lower Chippewa River

RELEASED: April 9, 2010

EAU CLAIRE — The Chippewa Valley Freedom Float and Veterans Program will take place May 15 at Round Hill in Arkansaw. World War II veteran and author Harold "Diz" Kronenberg will be a guest speaker.

Events begin with a one-mile "Freedom Float" from 3-4:30 p.m. from the Durand boat landing to Round Hill in honor of all veterans and their families. Participants will need to provide their own canoes, kayaks, vests, paddles and shuttle service.

The evening program will begin at 5 p.m. with Kronenberg's presentation at the Round Hill Pavilion. A social gathering will follow the event at Round Hill's rustic brick oven. The event is free and open to the public.

Kronenberg is the recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with seven oak leaf clusters, two presidential unit citations and six battle stars for his military service during World War II. He participated in 41 bombing missions as a ball turret gunner in such places as North Africa, Italy and England. Kronenberg's last mission was on June 5, 1944, a day before the Normandy invasion.

He also has published two books chronicling his experiences flying overseas, titled "Honor and Remembrance: the Military Heritage of the Chippewa Valley" and "An Airman's G.I. Journey."

Kronenberg taught social studies for 36 years and has been an active member of the Chippewa Valley sports community. He was a professional baseball catcher for five years, has won five national paddleball/racquetball championships, was a golf professional at Eau Claire's Hillcrest Golf and Country Club and has coached several different sports teams.

He also has produced two video recordings, including the "History of Bicycling in the Chippewa Valley," and "Play Ball — the History of Baseball in the Chippewa Valley." Now in his 80s, he still remains an active outdoorsman, sports enthusiast and writer.

Directions to Round Hill and parking information is available online.

The Freedom Float and Veterans Program is sponsored by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Environmental Adventure Center, the UW-Eau Claire Veterans Center and the Round Hill Corp. on the lower Chippewa River.
