RELEASED: April 6, 2010

EAU CLAIRE — The faculty, staff and students of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire department of mathematics will celebrate the 19th annual Mathematics Retreat beginning at 8 a.m. April 9. Area high school teachers, students and parents are invited and encouraged to attend.

From 8 a.m.-3 p.m. UW-Eau Claire students and faculty will give a variety of mathematics presentations. At 2 p.m., the Andrew J. Balas Lecture will be delivered by Dr. Susan Kelly, professor of mathematics at UW-La Crosse. Kelly is a 1985 graduate of UW-Eau Claire and received her master's degree and doctorate from Washington University in St. Louis. Her specialty is harmonic analysis and wavelets.

Kelly's talk will be on the topic of mathematical series. According to Kelly, series often become the part of calculus that students just want to get through and often bring to mind a list of convergence tests and little else. She will help the audience appreciate the "beauty and power of series," and explain how series are the mathematics behind current technologies and future discoveries. The talk will have material accessible to any student, with appropriate examples for education majors. A reception for participants and guests will follow.

All events are open to the public and will be held in Hibbard Humanities Hall on the corner of Garfield and Park avenues. A complete schedule with room locations can be found on the mathematics department Web site.

For additional information, e-mail Dr. Alex Smith, chair of the mathematics department, at smithaj@uwec.edu or call 715-836-3301.
