Summer Food Service Program to provide free meals to eligible children

RELEASED: April 1, 2010

EAU CLAIRE — In an effort to promote the importance of good nutrition, the Wisconsin Youth Success Program, Upward Bound, Blugold Beginnings and Office of Multicultural Affairs will again sponsor a Summer Food Service Program at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

The program provides nutritious meals to children during the summer, when free and reduced-price school meals are unavailable.

Free meals will be made available to eligible children 18 years of age and under. Persons over 18 years of age who are determined by a state or local public educational agency to be mentally or physically disabled and who also participate in a public or private non-profit school program during the regular school year may also receive free meals.

Service will be as follows:

  • Wisconsin Youth Success Program, June 15-July 16 in Hilltop Center
  • Upward Bound, June 14-July 22 in Davies Center
  • Blugold Beginnings, June 26-30 and July 25-29 in Davies Center
  • Office of Multicultural Affairs pre-college programs, June 13-26 and July 10-Aug. 8 in Davies Center.

Meals are provided to eligible children regardless of race, color, national origin, age, gender or disability, and there will be no discrimination in the course of meal service. The program is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and administered by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.

"This program fills a void created when school lunches are not available," said Vicki Funne Reed, project administrator for WYSP and director of University Recreation & Sport Facilities. "Helping parents meet the nutritional needs of their children is the strength of this program."

To file a complaint of discrimination, write USDA, director, Office of Civil Rights, 1400 Independence Ave. SW, Washington, D.C. 20250-9410 or call 800-795-3272 or 202-720-6382 (TTY). USDA is an equal opportunity provider and employer.
