Freshman Provocation Slated for Oct. 12

RELEASED: Sept. 30, 2009

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will host its third annual Freshman Provocation at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 12 in Zorn Arena.

"The provocation starts a monthlong focus on how liberal education relates to the students' total education, including their major and career choices, and its value throughout their lives," said Dr. Susan Turell, associate vice chancellor for Academic Affairs and dean of undergraduate studies.

Dr. Marty Wood, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, will start the provocation with a welcome. Three faculty members then will speak about how their own liberal educations have affected their personal and professional lives and why they advocate that students should work intentionally to develop broad content knowledge and skills across disciplines. Faculty speakers will be Dr. Evan Weiher, professor of biology; Allyson Loomis, assistant professor of English; and Dr. David Jones, associate professor of English.

"The goal of this event is to help first-year (and other) students better understand the value of a liberal education as well as the intellectual objectives of a university education," said Dr. Michael Weil, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. "This understanding should provide them with the rationale and incentive to take course work beyond that provided by their major."
