Counseling Services to Offer Fall Groups

RELEASED: Sept. 29, 2009

EAU CLAIRE — Counseling Services at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will offer the following groups during the fall semester:

  • Assertiveness Training: 4-5 p.m. Tuesdays, Oct. 27-Dec. 1. This six-session group, facilitated by Dr. P.J. Kennedy, provides training in assertive social skills such as learning to express oneself and feeling good about doing so, making requests, saying no, giving and receiving criticism and asking for behavior change.
  • Body Love: A Group for Women Searching for Body Acceptance: 4-5:30 p.m. Thursdays, Oct. 22-Dec 3. This group, facilitated by Dr. Adrienne Storm and intern Jennifer Schofield, is for women struggling to accept themselves and their bodies. Women preoccupied with issues of weight, food and body dissatisfaction should consider joining.
  • First Offenders Alcohol Education Groups: These groups are offered on an as-needed basis by counseling staff. The program meets the requirements of the Eau Claire court's First Offender Program. Contact Counseling Services for information about when groups are offered.
  • GLBTQ Support Group: Dates and times to be announced. The GLBTQ support group is a small, confidential and safe place to share successes and difficulties. The group, facilitated by Dr. Roberta Goodman, will explore relationships and use pertinent educational materials.
  • Living Well: 1-3:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Oct. 6-Nov. 10. This course teaches how to deal with fatigue, pain, frustration and other symptoms caused by chronic health conditions. Facilitated by Pete Chellman, Dr. Katherine Schneider and Ruth Kilness, the program is provided by Counseling Services and the Aging and Disability Resource Center of Eau Claire County free of charge.
  • 21st-Century Communication: Dates and times to be announced. This small student group will focus on a range of interactions with peers, faculty and staff through discussion and group exercises. The group, facilitated by Charles Vue and Dr. Roberta Goodman, also will feature practice and implementation of communication skills in a highly supportive environment.
  • Veterans' Support Group: 4-5 p.m. Thursdays, Oct. 29-Dec. 10. This is an unstructured support group for veterans facilitated by Dr. P.J. Kennedy. Speakers may be invited to discuss topics of interest as the group wishes.
  • Veterans' Families Support Group: 5-6 p.m. Thursdays, Oct. 29-Dec. 10. This group, facilitated by Dr. P.J. Kennedy and Diane Stegner Roadt, is an unstructured support group for veterans' family members and significant others.

Some groups will not meet during the week of Thanksgiving. Check with facilitators for details. All groups require a 30-minute preregistration appointment. To make an appointment, stop by the Counseling Services office (Old Library 2122) or call 715-836-5521.
