RELEASED: Sept. 22, 2009

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire music and theatre arts department will present the following musical performances during the week beginning Sept. 28. All events are free and open to the public.

Thursday, Oct. 1:

  • Junior Stuart Wallace, Bloomington, Ill., will present a trumpet recital at 5 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The program will begin with Charles Chaynes' Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra and "Piece en Forme de Habanera" by Maurice Ravel. The first half of the recital will conclude with Violin Sonata in F Major by Antonio Vivaldi. The second half of the program will begin with "Fanfare, Cantabile & Allegro" by Darren Fellows, which will feature the student ensemble Trumpet Fusion. The recital will conclude with "Black Orpheus" by Louis Bonfi and Antonio Carlos Jobim.

Sunday, Oct. 4:

  • Dr. Jerry Young, professor of music, and Dr. Barbara Young, lecturer in music, will present "Remembering Alec Wilder: The Numbered Suites for Tuba and Piano" at 2 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The performance, featuring Wilders music, will begin with Suite No. 1, "Effie," followed by "Jesse Suite," "Suite for Little Harvey" and "Thomas Suite." The performance will conclude with Suite No. 5, "Ethan Ayer Suite" and "Song for Carol." Wilder's music is a blend of jazz, classical European forms and the American popular song. Much of his music came about as a result of personal relationships with various musicians from Frank Sinatra to Frank Battisti. One of those relationships, a friendship with Harvey Phillips, resulted in the composition of his Suite No. 1 "Effie" and Suite 5 "Ethan Ayer." Wilder's Suite No. 1 has become a staple performance piece for every accomplished tuba player and is one of Wilder's most popular works.
