EAU CLAIRE — Maestro Magnus Martensson — a Swedish-born pianist and comedian who combines classical music and humor in the tradition of Victor Borge — will perform Sept. 29 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. His show will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Davies Theatre.

A conductor and composer, Martensson is music director of The Scandinavian Chamber Orchestra of New York, an orchestra he co-founded in 2002. Quite by accident in 2003, Martensson turned into a comedian-pianist during a concert at Victor Borge Hall in New York City in front of an enthusiastic audience that included members of Borge's family. Having received encouraging words from Borge's daughter, Martensson since has performed his comedy routine along with multi-instrumental performances in cities throughout the United States.

"Who doesn't miss Victor Borge?" asked the Buffalo (N.Y.) News. "How lucky, then, that Magnus Martensson is around to help fill the musical comedy void — not to mention Borge's big Scandinavian shoes."

Tickets are $20 ($10 for students) at the Service Center in Davies Center's east lobby and will be sold at the door. Patrons also may charge their tickets to MasterCard or Visa when they order by phone. Call 715-836-3727 or, outside the immediate Eau Claire area, call toll free 800-949-UWEC. A $3 handling fee will be added to all telephone charge orders.

The comedy concert, sponsored by the University Centers Event Services office, is part of Martensson's 2009-10 national tour, "Excuse me, does my piano count as one carry-on?"
