EAU CLAIRE — The first coach of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's golf team has been memorialized with a new fund through the UW-Eau Claire Foundation.

The Douglas Georgianni Memorial Fund was established in memory of Georgianni, who was killed in April while working in Cave Creek, Ariz. The fund will support the general needs of the women's golf program.

Georgianni directed the UW-Eau Claire women's golf program from 1995-2001 and was instrumental in developing it into a nationally recognized program. He led the team to its first conference title in 1998 and was named the conference coach of the year that season. Georgianni took the team to the NCAA Division III nationals in 2001— an accomplishment which has been repeated each year since then.

"Doug was a man of principle," said Tim Petermann, a retired UW-Eau Claire sports information director and current athletics department consultant. "He always had a smile on his face and was constantly upbeat. I enjoyed being around him and getting into conversations with him about anything. He was sure to have an opinion and a rationale for it. He supported the entire Blugold athletics program and could be seen in attendance at many athletic events, even some on the road."

The fund will help support travel to competitions, travel to areas south of Eau Claire for spring training and equipment needs.

To contribute to the fund, contact the UW-Eau Claire Foundation at 715-836-2911, email Vicky Petermann at petermavl@uwec.edu or visit the UW-Eau Claire Foundation Web site.
