Media Memo: "Private Dormitory" Clarification

TO: News Editors and Directors

FROM: Mike Rindo

DATE: Sept. 10, 2009

SUBJECT: "Private Dormitory" Clarification

Several news outlets have recently reported information about the proposed construction of a "private dormitory" near Carson Park that would house University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire students. It is the university's understanding that this project is an apartment complex being proposed by private developers. Please be aware UW-Eau Claire has no involvement in this private development and neither supports nor opposes the project.

Furthermore, the use of the term "dormitory" implies the proposed project would offer similar services provided to UW-Eau Claire students who live in residence halls and also to the students being housed this fall in local hotels. Those services include supervision by resident assistants and hall directors, organized activities, self-governance rights, front desk service, etc. UW-Eau Claire has no agreements with developers of the proposed project to provide such services to students.

In the interest of accurate reporting, we would appreciate media refrain from using the term "private dormitory" in conjunction with any reference to UW-Eau Claire.
