'The Chumscrubber' to Screen Sept. 17-20 at
UW-Eau Claire

RELEASED: Sept. 4, 2009

poster for ChumscrubberEAU CLAIRE — "The Chumscrubber" (2005), a satirical drama set in a self-involved Southern California suburban community, will screen Sept. 17-20 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Writer-director Arie Posin's debut film will be presented at 6 and 8:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday in Davies Theatre.

Jamie Bell stars as Dean Stiffle, a disaffected high-school student who must confront the disconnect between parents and teenagers when he finds his best friend, Troy, the school's drug dealer, has hung himself. The other teens who were part of the drug ring believe Dean knows where Troy's stash is hidden and won't listen when he pleads innocence. A kidnapping plot contrived to put pressure on Dean goes wrong — dragging him into the personal lives of the town's peculiar citizens.

Dramatizing the perils of suburban living is the titular character, a video game/cartoon figure of a beheaded teenager who swings his detached head at an army of zombies.

"At once dreamily surreal, acutely intelligent and strikingly tough-minded, this pitch-dark dramatic comedy recalls David Lynch and 'Donnie Darko' while remaining fresh and original to its core," wrote the Christian Science Monitor, which called the film "a stunning directorial debut." The Los Angeles Times described the film as "a smart, black-comic portrait of a lost generation [that] does what satire does best — it helps you see something important in our culture, in this case the disintegration of the American family, in a fresh light."

Glenn Close, Ralph Fiennes, Lauren Holly, Allison Janney, Carrie-Anne Moss and Rita Wilson star. The 108-minute film is rated R.

Admission is free at the door with a Blugold card or International Film Society membership. IFS memberships are available at the Service Center (715-836-3727) in Davies Center's east lobby.

More information about the campus film series is available online and at the Activities and Programs office, Davies Center 133.
