UW-Eau Claire Professor to Exhibit Photography
of Lake Tahoe at Public Library

RELEASED: Sept. 2, 2009

post for Ellen Mahaffy exhibitEAU CLAIRE — Ellen Mahaffy, an assistant professor in the communication and journalism department at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, will present a photography exhibit titled "Walk Among the Spirits" Sept. 8-Oct. 13 at the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library in Eau Claire. The exhibit features images from Lake Tahoe, Calif.

An artist's reception will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sept 13 in the library's second floor gallery.

Mahaffy said that before living in Lake Tahoe, her photographs began with an idea that she wanted to express through images.

"Once I encountered Tahoe's diverse environment, I found that the images around me expressed their own ideas; I just had to be attentive and receptive to them," Mahaffy said."When I looked carefully, I often found that the iconic shapes of the natural landscape transformed themselves into something before my eyes, and this surreal quality found in nature began to appear in my photographs."

Mahaffy earned a bachelor of fine arts degree in photography from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Md., and a master of fine arts degree in visual studies from The College at Brockport, State University of New York in Brockport, N.Y. She came to UW-Eau Claire in 2006, where she currently teaches photography, visual communication and magazine editing and design courses.
