UW-Eau Claire Students to Complete 'Labor of Love' Projects

RELEASED: Sept. 1, 2009

Labor of LoveEAU CLAIRE — University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire students will spend several hours of their Labor Day holiday completing volunteer projects in the Eau Claire area. With the theme "Love your campus and community," the seventh annual Labor of Love on Sept. 7 will coordinate projects that emphasize the idea of developing an appreciation for the campus and the community.

Teams will remove invasive plant species from Putnam Park; clean and repair areas of the historic State Theatre; do maintenance and yard work at Bolton Refuge House facilities; help with projects at the Eau Claire County Humane Association; and do "cleanup walkabouts" in areas within walking distance of campus, focusing on bike trails and downtown areas.

"Last year we didn't have enough projects for the number of volunteers that came to register," said Paula Stuettgen, the Labor of Love volunteer opportunities coordinator. "But this year, collaboration with a faculty member from the biology department added the Putnam Park project, and a great suggestion from a hall director and one of last year's student team leaders gave us the walkabouts."

Labor of Love primarily is intended to provide new students with projects that will introduce them to the Eau Claire community and, at the same time, perform a service that benefits the community. Nicole Wohlrab, Chancellors Hall director, and Jennifer Bailey, student team leader, will coordinate the walkabouts. Dr. Paula Kleintjes Neff of the UW-Eau Claire biology faculty will coordinate the Putnam Park invasive species removal.

Labor of Love is presented by the University Centers Community Engagement program. For more information about this and other volunteer services initiative programs, contact Paula Stuettgen, senior coordinator for assessment and special projects, at 715-836-4803.
