EAU CLAIRE — A November Eau Claire Chamber Orchestra concert will include the premiere of Dr. Ethan Wickman's "Les Jeunes et les Immortels" ("The Young and the Immortal").

Wickman, an assistant professor of music at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, will introduce his composition in a pre-concert talk at 6:45 p.m. Nov. 7 in the chapel of Grace Lutheran Church in Eau Claire. The concert will follow at 7:30 p.m. in the church.

Wickman composed the piece after visiting American and German military cemeteries in France last July. The sculptures and stonework at the cemeteries were distinctly different, but "the ambience in each was poignant and profound," Wickman said. His music was inspired by "the lives laid to rest there — predominantly young lives snuffed out at ages that surreally echo the ages of my students at the university."

ECCO's November concert also will feature Keith Thompson and Dan Julson, UW-Eau Claire alumni who now work in the Minneapolis area but commute to Eau Claire to be part of the orchestra. Thompson is ECCO's principal trumpet player. Julson is in his eighth season with the orchestra. They will be the soloists in Peter Lawrence's "Concertino for two trumpets, rhythm section and strings."

Lawrence "has composed works for groups ranging from jazz ensembles to symphony orchestras, in styles that range from Renaissance to funk," said Ivar Lunde Jr., a UW-Eau Claire professor emeritus of music and ECCO's music director and conductor for the Nov. 7 concert. "His music reflects fusions of diverse styles, thereby creating new sounds which can appeal to a wide audience."

The chamber orchestra is featured on Community Television's analog Channel 96 and digital channel 993 in Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls (and many other area communities) at 10:30 a.m. every Wednesday and at 6:30 p.m. every Friday. The current program, which will preview the Nov. 7 concert, features a conversation with Wickman and Lunde.
