'Plan 9 from Outer Space' to screen at UW-Eau Claire

RELEASED: Oct. 16, 2009

poster for Plan 9 from Outer SpaceEAU CLAIRE — Ed Wood's "Plan 9 from Outer Space" (1959), the camp classic regarded as the worst film of all time, will screen Oct. 29-Nov. 1 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The University Activities Commission of the Student Senate will present the film at 6 and 8:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday in Davies Theatre.

"A half-century after it was made, movies still don't come any worse than 'Plan 9 from Outer Space,'" wrote the Baltimore Sun, which called it "an awful movie you've got to see."

The incomprehensible plot involves grave robbers from outer space, who reanimate the dead and turn them loose in the world. The cast includes Gregory Walcott, Mona McKinnon, Maila "Vampira" Nurmi, Tor Johnson, Lyle Talbot and, in his last performance, horror icon Bela Lugosi. Special effects include cardboard tombstones and paper plates as flying saucers.

"Straight-faced sincerity is integral to any true clunker," wrote the New Statesman. "It's for this reason that the director Edward D. Wood Jr., immortalised in Tim Burton's 'Ed Wood,' has long been regarded as the king of the cinematic catastrophe. His 1959 disasterpiece 'Plan 9 from Outer Space' was named Worst Film Ever Made at the 1980 Worst Film Festival in New York. It has glaring continuity errors, a bewildered cast, and dialogue so cheesy it poses a danger to the lactose-intolerant. But it is Wood's belief that the film was enriching civilisation which makes it so wonderfully awful."

The 79-minute black-and-white film is not rated.

Admission is free at the door with a Blugold Card or International Film Society membership. IFS memberships are available at the Service Center (715-836-3727) in Davies Center's east lobby.

More information about the campus film series is available online and at the Activities and Programs office, Davies Center 133.
