EAU CLAIRE — Dr. Douglas Tallamy, professor and chair of the entomology and wildlife ecology department at the University of Delaware, will give two presentations Oct. 29 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Tallamy is the author of the 2007 book "Bringing Nature Home: How Native Plants Sustain Wildlife in Our Gardens," which discusses the importance of maintaining insect diversity with native plants in order to sustain the entire food web.

As part of the university's biology seminar series, Tallamy will present "The Impact of Alien Plants on Food Webs" at 4 p.m. in Room 413 of Phillips Science Hall. His second presentation, titled "Bringing Nature Home," open to the public, will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Room 100 of Schneider Hall.

The Conservationists, a UW-Eau Claire student group, will sell Tallamy's book as a fundraiser before the evening presentation, beginning at 7 p.m. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer called the book "an informative and engaging account of the ecological interactions between plants and wildlife" and a Booklist review said Tallamy "presents compelling arguments for aesthetically pleasing, ecologically healthy gardening. With nothing less than the future of North American biodiversity at stake, Tallamy imparts an encouraging message: It's not too late to save the ecosystem-sustaining matrix of insects and animals, and the solution is as easy as replacing alien plants with natives."

Also an adjunct professor of biological sciences at the University of Delaware, Tallamy has written numerous articles on behavioral ecology of insects, conservation of biodiversity, impact of alien plants on native ecosystems and plant-insect interactions.
