McNair Scholars to present research in December

EAU CLAIRE — The Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will host a series of senior McNair Scholar presentations in December.

The McNair scholars, their mentors and presentation schedule are as follows:

Dec. 3, 6-7:50 p.m.

  • Senior Michelle Hazard, Fairchild, and her mentors, Dr. Erica Benson, associate professor of English, and Dr. Theresa Kemp, professor of English, will present "Dialect and Code Switching in the Poetry of Paul Laurence Dunbar."
  • Senior Shane Chandler, Colfax, and his mentor, Dr. Johannes Strohschnk, professor of foreign languages, will present "Dea Lohar: A Playwright for Post-Unification German Theatre."
  • Senior Christopher Dierich, Menomonie, and his mentor, Dr. Kristin Schaupp, assistant professor of philosophy and religious studies, will present "A Causal Theory of Knowledge: The Problem with Induction."

Dec. 10, 6-7:50 p.m.

  • Senior Katelyn Westaby, Stanley, and her mentor, Dr. Blaine Peden, professor of psychology, will present "Linguistic Analysis of the Well-Being Spectrum."
  • Senior Brianna Butera, Rib Lake, and her mentors, Dr. Jessica Miller, assistant professor of foreign languages, and Dr. Maria Ciriza, assistant professor of foreign languages, will present "Phonetics and Second Language Acquisition: Spanish and French Models."
  • Senior Anders Peterson, White Bear Lake, Minn., and his mentor, John Loomis, assistant professor of English, will present "The Genesis Project: Evolution of an Original Graphic Novel."

Dec. 17, 7-8:50 p.m.

  • Senior Monica Yang, Wausau, and her mentor, Dr. Kathleen Nybroten, assistant professor of sociology, will present "Academic Success of Hmong Children: The Function of Parental Involvement."
  • Senior Buckley Cloud, Wisconsin Dells, and his mentor, Dr. Scott Lowe, professor of philosophy and religious studies, will present "Integrating Buddhism and Science: Taixu's Syncretic Approach."
  • Senior Kyle Dutter, Eau Claire, and his mentor, Dr. Manuel Fernandez, assistant professor of foreign languages, will present "U.S. Real ID Act: Implications on Hispanic/Latino Population and Immigration."

The presentations, which are free and open to the public, will take place in the lounge on the second floor of McIntyre Library. Each presentation will be about 30 minutes, with time for questions and answers.

The presentation series began Nov. 19. Those already presented include "Research in the Structural and Physical Characteristics of a Linear MUC-1 Peptide" by senior Michael McAnally, Chippewa Falls, and his mentor Dr. Thao Yang, associate professor of chemistry; and "Reflections upon Ecology and Environmental Damage during Operation Bootstrap in Puerto Rico in the Works of Rosario Ferr" by senior Danielle Alba, Appleton, and her mentor, Dr. Eva Santos-Phillips, professor of foreign languages.

Each year faculty recognize a number of talented undergraduates' academic achievements by nominating them as McNair Scholars. McNair Scholars are students who plan to enter graduate school and pursue doctoral degrees. They engage in two years of collaborative research with faculty and publish and present scholarly work in their respective disciplines.
