Jazz Ensembles I and II to tour Wisconsin high schools

RELEASED: Nov. 18, 2009

EAU CLAIRE — University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Jazz Ensemble I and Jazz Ensemble II will tour nine Wisconsin high schools Nov. 30-Dec. 1.

Schools included in the tour are in New London, Ashwaubenon, Fond du Lac, Oconomowoc, Lake Geneva, Shawano, Hortonville, Hartland and Beloit. All of the stops will involve clinics and performances by the high school and UW-Eau Claire jazz ensembles.

Evening concerts for Jazz Ensemble I will be Nov. 30 at Fond du Lac High School and Dec. 1 at Oconomowoc High School. Jazz Ensemble II evening concerts will be Nov. 30 at Hortonville High School and Dec. 1 at Oconomowoc High School. All evening concerts will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Jazz Ensemble I will perform selections from its latest CD, "Soul Searching," along with recent student compositions. Jazz Ensemble II will perform "Buleria, Solea y Rumba," composed by Grammy winner Maria Schneider and recorded in 2008 by Jazz Ensemble I.

Each ensemble will perform at three schools per day, and each stop will include a performance and a clinic with groups and individuals. Three of the stops — Oconomowoc, Lake Geneva and Beloit — will include a small jazz festival with multiple schools in attendance. At the festivals, the ensembles will perform clinics, adjudicate ensembles and perform throughout the day. On Dec. 1, both ensembles will come together to perform.

This is the second year Jazz I and Jazz II will go on tour, but it is the first year both ensembles will visit the eastern Wisconsin and Milwaukee areas.

"Both ensembles are performing at such a level that they are both able to tour," said Robert Baca, professor of music and director of the ensembles. "We are bringing our message and our vision to these schools."
