Opera Workshop set for Nov. 16-17

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Opera Workshop Ensemble will present two free performances of "Bel Canto: Scenes from the Masters of Italian Opera" at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 16 and Nov. 17 in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

The performances will include operatic scenes composed by famous composers Gioacchino Rossini, Gaetano Donizetti, Vincenzo Bellini and Giuseppe Verdi. The performances, to be sung in Italian with English subtitles, will highlight students' achievements in vocal performance and dance.

The performance will begin with a scene from "Il Barbiere di Siviglia," a duet from the opera "La Favorita," a scene from "La Cenerentola" and two scenes from the production "L'Elisir d' amore." Workshop ensemble members also will perform a duet from "I Capuleti e I Montecchi," a scene from Verdi's "Falstaff" and a piece from Bellini's "La Sonnambula."

Members of the Opera Workshop Ensemble are sophomore James Held, Waukesha; senior Jonas Hacker, Lake Delton; senior Emily Worzalla, Madison; and senior Lani Lutz, Prior Lake, Minn., one of the featured dancers for the performance.

Other members are senior Lauren Buelow, La Crosse; junior Kyrsten Olson, Ladysmith; junior Jennifer Lange, Eau Claire; senior Sam Williams, Eau Claire; and Toms Dominguez, Mukwonago. Also performing are senior Lora Anderson, Green Bay; junior Leisa Sunier, Kenosha; sophomore Anthony Reed, Alexandria Minn.; junior Amelia Lumsden, Baraboo; senior Tara Metcalf, Eau Claire; and sophomore Koryna Flores, Prairie Du Sac, one of the featured dancers for the performance.

Additional ensemble members are junior Elisabeth Cejpek, Hillsboro; junior Rebecca Kidnie, St. Paul, Minn.; senior Angela Nieman, Milwaukee; junior Stephanie Dietz, La Crosse; senior Erin Kenneavy, Appleton; and junior David Starry, Portage.

"Bel Canto" is directed by Dr. Mitra Sadeghpour, associate professor of music, with music direction by Dr. Jessica Riley, assistant professor of music. Mallory Prucha Rishoi, artist for the music and theatre arts department, is the costume coordinator. Lutz and Flores are choreographers, with accompaniment by freshman Andrew Steffen, New Richmond.
