The Singing Statesmen to perform Nov. 13

The Singing StatesmenEAU CLAIRE — The Singing Statesmen of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will perform at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 13 in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The performance will feature many Spanish selections to be presented on the group's upcoming tour of Argentina and Uruguay during the university's winter break.

Directed by Dr. Gary Schwartzhoff, professor of music, The Statesmen will begin with Anton Bruckner's "Trosterin Musik," "Cantate Domino" by Hans Leo Hassler and Ola Gjeilo's "Ubi Caritas." Next will be Franz Biebl's "Ave Maria," featuring junior David Starry, Portage, senior Nels Urtel, Mankato, Minn., and junior Joe Holtan, Port Washington. The second set will include "Alleluia" by Randall Thompson, Schwartzhoff's arrangement of Ralph Manuel's "Aleluia Brasileira," and "La Tarde" and "Adiós, Corazón de Almendra" by Carlos Guastavino.

The third set will begin with a performance by the Innocent Men, an a cappella group auditioned out of The Statesmen. The Innocent Men will perform "Angel" by Sarah McLachlan and Eric Hagmann's arrangement of "Insomniac."

The Statesmen's final set will begin with "All Through the Night," a Welsh carol arranged by Mack Wilberg, featuring Dr. Richard Fletcher, professor of music, on clarinet; James Mulholland's "When I Fall in Love," with senior Mike Renneke, Eagan, Minn., on horn; "Bonse Aba," a Zambian folk song arranged by Andrew Fischer, featuring junior tenor Tomás Dominguez, Mukwonago, and Urtel on percussion; and "Ramkali," arranged by Ethan Sperry. Next will be "Pirate Song" by Tim Jones, "If You're Out There" by John Legend with Urtel on conga, and Ron Jeffers' "I Have Had Singing." The Singing Statesmen will conclude their performance with songs of the university, "Hail University," "Alma Mater" and "Fight Song."

The Statesmen have represented UW-Eau Claire on six international concert tours. For their upcoming international tour, the Statesmen will perform at La Plata Cathedral in Buenos Aires, in addition to a shared performance at either the Universidad de Belgrano or Universidad del Salvador. The group also will perform at the Basilica de San Francisco, followed by a shared concert with Coro Santa Maria de Los Angeles, and perform a recital on the ferry to Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay.

The Singing Statesmen are celebrating their 44th season as one of the premier university male choruses in the United States. The group is one of six choral ensembles on the UW-Eau Claire campus, recognized as Wisconsin's "Singing University."

Seating is reserved for this event, so concertgoers are encouraged to purchase tickets early. Available at the University Service Center, 715-836-3727 or 800-949-UWEC, tickets are $5 for the general public; $4 for those 62 and older, 17 and younger and faculty and staff with a university ID; and $1.50 for students with a university ID.
