November activities planned in support,
appreciation of veterans

RELEASED: Nov. 3, 2009

Veterans Center logoEAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire has scheduled various activities during November in appreciation and support of veterans.

  • Nov. 11 — A Veterans Day open house will be held in the Veterans Center, Room 20 of Schofield Hall. A complimentary continental breakfast will be available from 7:30 to 9 a.m., and David Backstrom, Vietnam War veteran and retired director of University Police at UW-Eau Claire, will speak at noon on the topic "Returning to Vietnam … 2010." Cake will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Nov. 17 — A discussion titled "Returning Veterans: How Can We Help?" will be presented from 10:30 a.m. to noon in the Alumni Room of Davies Center. Connie Bengston, coordinator with the Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom program of the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Medical Center, will discuss the needs, specifically medical, of veterans of current or recent combat situations. The OIF/OEF program emphasizes community-based, early-intervention services focused on the needs of veterans who have served in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo, Kuwait and East Africa.
  • Nov. 19 — "Letters Home" will be presented by the Griffin Theatre Company of Chicago at 7:30 p.m. in Zorn Arena. "The 90-minute work is an emotionally wrenching tapestry of the letters (often the final correspondence) exchanged between American troops deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq, and their families and loved ones back home," wrote the Chicago Sun Times. Tickets for the Artists Series performance are available at the Service Center, 715-836-3727, and will be sold at the door.
  • Nov. 20 — "Returning Home," a panel discussion featuring campus veterans, will be presented from noon to 1 p.m. in the Alumni Room of Davies Center. P.J. Kennedy, director of UW-Eau Claire's Counseling Services, will facilitate the discussion. Refreshments will be served.

The activities are sponsored by UW-Eau Claire's Artists Series and Veterans Center.
