RELEASED: May 27, 2009

EAU CLAIRE — University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Continuing Education/UW-Extension's Line Up for College program was awarded a grant to purchase 300 books from First Book, a nonprofit organization that promotes literacy by supplying books to low-income children.

Launched in fall 2008, Line Up for College provides middle school students with strong academic support through tutoring, mentoring and early exposure to the university community.

The program's goal is to make the transition to high school more comfortable and help students clarify their future educational goals. Line Up for College is funded by a grant from the UW System Committee on Baccalaureate Expansion and administered by UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education.

Line Up for College will provide each student with one new book per month from October to May. The books will be incorporated into the Line Up for College curriculum during tutoring and mentoring sessions. The students also will create a quarterly newsletter that will include reviews of books they received through the First Book program.

"Access to books is one of most important factors affecting literacy," said Mary Huffcut, a Continuing Education associate outreach specialist who will coordinate the Line Up for College program. "The best part of First Book is that these books will be the students' to keep."
