EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire has established an accelerated reading specialist licensure program.

The College of Education and Human Sciences' new 317 licensure program will serve teachers who already hold a 316 reading teacher license.

"The new model offers in-class and online instruction that allows graduate students the freedom to plan the majority of their workload around busy schedules and requires fewer trips to and from campus," said Dr. Sherry Macaul, professor of curriculum and instruction.

The new program will make it possible for a graduate student to complete the coursework for the reading specialist licensure in one year. Two courses will be offered in the fall and spring semesters, with each class lasting half of the semester. Two other courses will be offered in the summer.

Educators with reading teacher certification need a master's degree to apply for the 317 licensure. Students in the accelerated 317 reading specialist licensure program must take additional coursework for the master's program, complete a portfolio and participate in an oral examination.

According to the 2007 Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction Supply and Demand Report, the number of reading specialists in the state is below average. The data also indicates that many reading specialists are expected to retire in the next few years.

"The licensed reading specialists who will retire must be replaced," Macaul said. "UW-Eau Claire's accelerated program will increase the number of licensed reading specialists available to meet the needs of children throughout Wisconsin."
