May 21 WYSP Fundraiser to Move
From Chaos Water Park to Action City

RELEASED: May 20, 2009

EAU CLAIRE — A May 21 benefit for the Wisconsin Youth Sports Program that was to be held at the new Chaos Water Park Resort in Eau Claire will now be held at Action City, WYSP officials have learned.

WYSP, the award-winning free summer sports camp held annually on the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire campus, will receive 50 percent of Action City admission fees and 25 percent of all food sales during the fundraising event from 4-9 p.m., said Lisa Schuetz, WYSP activity director.

By mentioning WYSP at the door, those attending can purchase an unlimited play wristband for $13.95, Schuetz said.

According to a Chaos Water Park Resort news release, the WYSP benefit's change in location occurred when the new water park owners learned following state inspections that the facility's opening will be delayed at least one week.

Federal funding for the National Youth Sports Program, WYSP's predecessor program, was eliminated last year, but UW-Eau Claire decided to continue the program and rename it. The youth sports program serves more than 400 children ages 10-16 for five weeks each summer. WYSP now relies on community partnerships and private funding for support.

This year's WYSP camp will run June 9-July 10, and registration remains open. WYSP will be held Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. (including transportation time). No camp will be held July 1-3.

This is the 29th year the program will be offered by UW-Eau Claire's University Recreation & Sport Facilities. It will provide area youth ages 10-16 with opportunities to learn sports skills and receive information about issues relating to drugs and alcohol, nutrition, careers, math, science and higher education. Participants receive a free medical and dental exam, transportation (for students residing in Eau Claire or Altoona school districts), and breakfast and lunch each day.

Special opportunities are available to 13-16-year-old participants, including training in the university's Crest Fitness Center, access to the climbing wall, and guidance in resume writing and personal finance.
