UW-Eau Claire ROTC Student to Study in Panama this Summer

RELEASED: May 20, 2009

EAU CLAIRE — University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire sophomore and ROTC cadet Zachary Boldon, Stoddard, will spend three weeks in Panama learning the culture and enhancing his career as a future officer in the U.S. military.

Boldon has been selected to participate in the Olmsted Cultural Immersion Program, which was established to provide overseas travel and cultural immersion to cadets and midshipmen of the highest caliber. Leadership potential and scholastic ability are among the criteria considered when choosing candidates for this program, and Boldon was required to write an essay explaining how the program would be beneficial to him as a future officer.

On May 29, Boldon will begin introductory classes at West Point, where he will meet with other cadets going to Panama. They will fly to Panama City on June 1. During his stay, Boldon will study Panamanian culture, train with the military and participate in humanitarian projects at a local school and a soup kitchen. He also will take a raft trip, tour the jungle canopy and visit with the Kuna Indians located about an hour outside of Panama City.

"I really look forward to the internship this summer," Boldon said, adding that he is particularly interested in learning about different cultures and civilizations."I know that the experience will forever change me and enhance my skills as a future soldier, officer and citizen."

The Olmsted Cultural Immersion Program is funded by the estate of Gen. George H. Olmsted and the Olmsted Foundation. The program has sponsored more than 1,900 cadets/midshipmen and funded 271 trips to more than 600 locations in more than 86 countries.
