EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's chapter of Golden Key International Honour Society held its annual fourth grade essay contest in April.

All fourth-graders in the Eau Claire Area School District were invited to submit responses to a guided essay, "America had just fallen upon hard times and it was up to me to fix it. The first thing I did (was)"

Essays were judged by university students who are members of Golden Key. Essays were judged on creativity and ingenuity. The winning essays were:

  • First: Nathan Larson from Flynn Elementary School; teacher Kelly McCaughey.
  • Second: Breven Quinn from Montessori Charter School; teacher Jodie Wall.
  • Third: Jennifer Wright from Montessori Charter School; teacher Jodie Wall.
  • Honorable mention: Ali Benson from Meadowview Elementary School; teacher Joann Walker.
  • Honorable mention: Dominic Colonna from Montessori Charter School; teacher Jodie Wall.
  • Honorable mention: Mitchell Kortbein from Longfellow Elementary School; teacher Scott Gee.
  • Caleb Smith from Flynn Elementary School; teacher Kelly McCaughey.

The first-place winner received $50 and $100 for his classroom. Other winners earned $100 each for their classrooms. All participants received certificates.

Through the essay contest, Golden Key International Honour Society fulfilled its service initiative of literacy and encouraged local youth to extend their writing and creativity beyond the classroom.

Additionally, the fourth-graders were able to recognize the importance and enjoyment of writing before entering middle school and they took steps toward increasing their literacy.
