Non-partisan Workshop Provides Information to Young People on Running for Office

RELEASED: May 13, 2009

EAU CLAIRE — The Young Candidates Academy — a free, non-partisan workshop — for people 18-30 on the process of running for office will be offered June 13-14 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

The two-day workshop, funded by the Bremer Foundation and the UW-Eau Claire Foundation, will help young people who are interested in running for and getting elected to local and state offices. It is being coordinated by Dr. Geoffrey Peterson, an associate professor of political science, whose primary areas of research and teaching are focused on electoral politics and voting behavior.

"We believe the YCA can help young people find their voice in the world of politics and provide them with the skills they need to succeed," said Peterson, who also will present at the workshop. "We believe we can give them the hands-on knowledge they need to effectively compete at the ballot box."

The workshop will cover information on entering elections, running a campaign, being a candidate and organizing a campaign. Specific topics include voter turnouts and ballots in state and local elections; fund-raising and finances; working with media and developing materials; filing information in Wisconsin; communicating messages; finding staff; and volunteers.

In addition to Peterson, presenters include Kathy Daggs, who served as the deputy general election director in Wisconsin for Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign and is now Wisconsin State Sen. Pat Kreitlow's chief of staff; John Frank, a political science and economics instructor at the Chippewa Valley Technical College; and Dr. Rodd Freitag, an associate professor of political science who teaches classes in American government and politics.

Space is limited to 10 people. Selection will be based on interest, skills and background in politics. The deadline to apply is May 22. Apply online at the political science department's Web site.

The workshop includes materials, meals and lodging. Travel scholarships are available.
