SUBJECT: Regents Approve Doctorate of Nursing Practice Degree at UW-Eau Claire
The UW System Board of Regents today approved establishing a doctorate of nursing practice degree program at UW-Eau Claire.
The DNP, which will begin in summer 2010, will be the first doctoral program offered at UW-Eau Claire.
A professional doctorate, the DNP is similar to the doctorates required of physicians, dentists, pharmacists and attorneys.
The DNP will meet the new national educational recommendations for advanced practice nurses, which change the entry level degree from a master's to a doctorate. The recommendations — determined by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing — take effect in 2015.
Apart from collaborations involving the traditional doctoral campuses, this is the first doctoral degree offered by any of the UW System's 11 comprehensive universities. The board also approved today a similar DNP program at UW Oshkosh.
For more information, contact Dr. Mary Zwygart-Stauffacher, interim dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, at 715-836-4977 or zwygarmc@uwec.edu, or Dr. Rosemary Jadack, graduate program coordinator in the department of nursing, at 715-836-5004 or jadackra@uwec.edu.
