Two UW-Eau Claire Students Recognized for Superior Papers

RELEASED: May 7, 2009

EAU CLAIRE — Two students at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire have been recognized for work they presented at the Wisconsin Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies Student Conference.

Seniors Nicholas Davis, Brookfield, and Chase Sova, Spooner, were awarded Leonard Gambrell World Politics Awards. The award is a scholarship established by the UW-Eau Claire Foundation to recognize a superior paper presented at the WIPCS Student Conference. The theme of this year's conference was "Building a New Earth, Pathways of Peace and Justice."

Davis was honored for his paper "Peaceful Cooperation through International Associations." He is a comprehensive political science major. Sova was honored for his paper "An Adapting World System: Globalization and World Food Production." He is a Spanish major with a minor in global studies.

In addition to the UW-Eau Claire award, Sova's paper and presentation received the WIPCS Paper Recognition Award at the conference. He was one of four recipients.

WIPCS is an organization of private and public colleges and universities in Wisconsin dedicated to enriching academic and public discourse on issues of peace and conflict. This year's student conference was held April 21 at Marian University in Fond du Lac.

Leonard Gambrell, a UW-Eau Claire emeritus professor of political science, taught at the university from 1966 until he retired in 2002. That same year he received the UW System Board of Regents Teaching Excellence Award. The recognition carried with it a cash award, which he used to establish the Leonard Gambrell World Politics Fund. Winners of awards from the fund are selected by a committee of UW-Eau Claire political science faculty. Gambrell now lives in New Mexico.
