Mother's Day Challenge Results in 25 Scholarships

RELEASED: May 7, 2009

EAU CLAIRE — Combining school with motherhood will be a little easier for 25 mothers attending the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, thanks to a gift challenge made by a UW-Eau Claire alumni couple.

Tom and Jeannie Flesch, Columbus, Ohio, issued a challenge honoring their mothers, Rozanne Flesch and Elizabeth Flock, through the UW-Eau Claire Foundation to match gifts for scholarships for UW-Eau Claire students who are mothers. As a result, 25 such students will receive $400 scholarships in fall 2009.

"You think a lot of your mother," Tom Flesch said. "This is a nice way to remember her. My mother was born on May 10, which Mother's Day often falls on, so it seems appropriate to honor her with this."

Rozanne Flesch, who died in July 2007, had five children and a degree in occupational therapy. She was a volunteer with the St. Mary's Hospital Auxiliary for more than 40 years.

"My mother graduated from the UW-Whitewater with a degree in English and business education," Jeannie Flesch said. "She taught between babies until after baby four, then she stayed home to care for her family, which eventually included seven children. At 86 she still enjoys baking, gardening and her grandchildren and is famous for her homemade dill pickles and sweet rolls."

Paulson; Sally Webb honoring Lou Etta Webb; Jill Muenich honoring Sharon Muenich; Randy Newton honoring Barbara Newton; Michele Olson honoring Carmen Ouimet; Kathy Now honoring Rita Ann Meyer; Margaret Stalka honoring Evelyn F.
