EAU CLAIRE — Dr. Donald P. Christian, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, announced today that he will leave UW-Eau Claire to accept a leadership position at the State University of New York at New Paltz.

Christian, who came to UW-Eau Claire in 2004, has accepted the position of provost and vice president for academic affairs at SUNY New Paltz. He also will hold tenure in the biology department.

"I value the time that I have spent at UW-Eau Claire, and am proud to have been able to serve as dean at such a fine university," Christian said. "The opportunity to work with so many wonderful people and programs has been a true pleasure for me. I will miss UW-Eau Claire at the same time I am excited about the challenges of a new position."

Christian will continue in his position at UW-Eau Claire until early July and begin his new position in New York Aug. 1.

"Don Christian has been an outstanding colleague and a highly effective dean for his college," said Interim Provost and Vice Chancellor Marty Wood. "He possesses an enviable combination of excellent professional talents with a deeply personal commitment to ethical principles and humane, compassionate leadership. He has guided our largest college through adverse circumstances with remarkable calm, dependable wisdom, and reliable effectiveness."

As one of his department chairs noted, Christian "has been a tireless champion for liberal education and for interdisciplinary initiatives" while at UW-Eau Claire, Wood said.

After appropriate consultation in the coming weeks, Chancellor Brian Levin-Stankevich will announce plans for identifying an interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
