EAU CLAIRE — A member of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire faculty is being recognized for her work empowering preadolescent girls.

Dr. Pamela Forman, assistant professor of sociology, will receive the Jane Addams Outstanding Service Award from the Women in the Profession Committee of the Midwest Sociological Society during its annual meeting April 2-5 in Iowa.

The award, which recognizes service to girls and women who have traditionally been invisible and under-rewarded in society and in the discipline of sociology, was established to make visible such efforts and to highlight positive role models who advance girls and women's issues, causes or status through involvement in service activities. Honored are modern-day people who embody the passion, dedication and activism of Jane Addams in their efforts to improve the status of girls or women.

Forman is being recognized for her work with Adventure Girls, an afterschool program for preadolescent girls focusing on self-esteem, cooperation and leadership. The program is specifically directed toward girls from low-income or racial/ethnic minority families.

Adventure Girls began in the spring of 2006 as a collaboration between Longfellow Elementary School and UW-Eau Claire, said Forman. With this spring's program for fifth-grade girls, Adventure Girls will have served 63 girls in the community. Their mentors have included 29 university students in addition to faculty from several areas of the university. The program is funded by the UW-Eau Claire Office of Research and Sponsored Programs and by the Eau Claire Community Foundation.

"I am proud to have helped start a program that is making a difference in this community and contributing to my scholarship as a sociologist," said Forman.
